As of August 21, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended the processing period for certain Temporary Foreign Worker Program work permit applications from 60 days to 90 days.
Earlier, eligible workers who submitted their work permit application while waiting for the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) had 60 days to provide the required LMIA documentation. This period has now increased to 90 days, giving workers and employers an additional 30 days to complete the process.
The update can provide valuable flexibility to temporary foreign workers whose work permits are expiring while their employer’s LMIA application is still being processed. However, it is important to note that this is not a general 90-day extension for all Canadian work permits. The change applies to specific Temporary Foreign Worker Program applications that meet IRCC’s requirements. Workers should also remember that applying to extend a work permit before it expires may allow them to benefit from maintained status and, where eligible, continue working under the conditions of their existing permit while their application is processed.
